Lagos Life slang and terms glossary

The game is full of Lagos slang. Here is what the terms mean, in plain English.

Agbero
A street tout who collects informal fees at motor parks and bus stops.
Alabaru
A load carrier in a market. In the game this is a Fitness action at Balogun Market.
Ankara
Colourful wax-print fabric, widely used for Nigerian clothing.
Buka / Mama Put
A small local eatery serving home-style food. Amala Shitta is the game’s best known one.
C of O
Certificate of Occupancy, the document that proves you hold legal title to land.
Chapman
A fruity, fizzy non-alcoholic cocktail. In the game it is the cheapest Fun boost.
Danfo
The yellow and black minibus that carries most Lagos commuters.
Face-me-I-face-you
A tenement house with rooms facing each other across a shared corridor.
Gist
Chat or gossip. Also the verb: to gist someone.
Go-slow
A traffic jam.
Keke
A three-wheeled motorised tricycle taxi, also called keke napep.
LAPO
Short for LAPO Microfinance Bank. In the game a LAPO Baby starts life with a small microfinance loan to repay.
NEPA
The old name for the national electricity authority. Today it is slang for power supply, so "NEPA took light" means a power cut.
Nepo baby
Someone born into wealth or connections. In the game it is the easy starting roll.
Oga
Boss, or a respectful way to address a man in authority.
Okada
A motorcycle taxi.
Omo-onile
Members of a family that claims traditional ownership of land and demands a levy from buyers.
Owambe
A lavish party, usually a Yoruba celebration with live music, aso ebi and plenty of food.
POS
A point-of-sale agent who lets people withdraw cash or transfer money. The POS Stand is the cheapest business in the game.
Shakara
Showing off or putting on airs.
Self-contain
A single room with its own bathroom and kitchen area.
Suya
Spicy skewered grilled meat, sold at night in most neighbourhoods.
Tokunbo
Imported second-hand goods, especially cars.
Zobo
A chilled hibiscus drink.
